What is the Military Affinity Group (MAG)?
Founded in 2012, the University of Chicago Military Affinity Group (MAG) is a shared-interest group targeted to alumni, faculty, administrators and other University of Chicago affiliates with significant life experience or interest in military affairs, military culture, and the intersection of military and civil or academic life. Its mission is to strengthen the bonds between members of the community at the University of Chicago interested in military matters through dialogue, advocacy, networking, mentoring, and service.
Who may join the MAG?
The MAG welcomes all alumni, faculty, administrators and other affiliates of the University of Chicago.
What if I’m not a Veteran?
The MAG is completely open to anyone with an interest in military issues, culture, and affairs, and to anyone with an interest in the intersection of military and civil or academic affairs. The MAG’s mission is to strengthen the bonds between members of the community at the University of Chicago interested in military matters through dialogue, advocacy, networking, mentoring, and service. The MAG Board particularly encourages students considering a future in the military to draw on the military experiences of faculty, employees, current ROTC students, and alumni to inform their decisions.
How does the MAG relate to Alumni Association Chapters?
The MAG is a national affinity group open to all members of the University of Chicago community, and in some locations around the country like Washington D.C., and Chicago, IL, concentrations of MAG members meet to discuss military issues, advocate, network, socialize, and to continue their service to the nation through MAG service projects. These military-related activities are one of many interest areas which regional Alumni Association Chapters weave together into a vibrant University of Chicago community life. MAG activities are planned in consultation with the local Alumni Association chapters to assure the MAG complements, and never conflict with, the other interests and activities in the local area. Alumni and other University of Chicago community members who might not have known about the MAG often learn of us through the tight cooperation and advocacy of the Alumni Association Chapters. We’re a military-oriented group – Unity of Effort above all else!
How do I attend events?

Can I attend a Military Affinity Group Happy Hour?
Absolutely! If you have an interest in military issues, an interest in how military and civil or academic issues intersect, an interest in military culture, or you just plain enjoy socializing with the larger military community – you’re very welcome at a MAG Happy Hour! Our objective is to hold MAG Happy Hours on the second Thursday of every month, at every location nationwide. That said, check with your local Alumni Chapter – the MAG coordinates closely to avoid conflicts with other activities, and might have to move the date to “de-conflict!” If you’re intrigued, you really should stop by regardless of your background – and bring a military friend as well, even if they’re not part of the University of Chicago community! We think you’ll have a pretty good time.
How can I stay informed about MAG events and activities?
Just register on our home page and fill out a profile under the 'My Account' link. Sign up to receive our communications in the ‘Preferences' section of your profile. In addition, you can check our website as often as you like to learn about our latest activities.
How do I suggest a speaker or topic for an event?
Please return to our home page and enter your suggestion in the 'Let Us Know' section. We'll forward your email to the MAG Board of Directors.
How can I become more involved with the MAG?
We welcome your participation! New ideas and suggestions are our lifeblood. Take a look at our volunteer page and select an activity that appeals to you.
What are the forums?
The forums are message boards for the MAG community. Use it to ask for advice, connect with MAG members, discuss military issues, or alert the MAG community to an upcoming event (i.e., are you publishing an article, speaking at an event, or writing a book).
What if I want to contribute to the forum?
We are definitely excited hear what you have to say! Either contribute to one of the existing message boards or start a new discussion under general topics. We simply ask that you be respectful of fellow MAG members, and of course the University of Chicago reserves the right to remove any content if necessary.
