2017 Veterans Day address at the Law School Featuring: Aaron Lindstrom
Army Veteran Aaron Lindstrom currently serves as the Solicitor General for the State of Michigan.
Law School Veterans hosted 2004 graduate and Army Veteran Aaron Lindstrom on Thursday, November 9th to give the second annual Veterans Day address at the Law School. Lindstrom currently serves as the Solicitor General for the State of Michigan. In that capacity, he is responsible for representing the state on important cases in the Michigan courts of appeal, the Michigan Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Lindstrom’s remarks focused on “The Anatomy of Appeal,” dissecting the process of how his offices takes cases and shepherds them through each stage of the appellate litigation process. He offered two case studies, describing his arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court in Michigan v. Environmental Protection Agency (2014) and Coleman v. Tollefson (2015). Lindstrom applied lessons from his time as an Army Officer to describe how he leads the staff who assist him and how he deals with quick series of questions from judges, comparing his experience to times in the Army when he was forced to think on his feet as drill instructors yelled in his face. He advised students on what steps they should take now to prepare for careers as appellate lawyers and noted some of the Veterans who had served in prominent positions in American legal history, including more than a third of Supreme Court justices in the history of the Republic.
Lindstrom is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as an Army Cavalry Officer. After leaving active duty, he graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. He then served as a law clerk to Judge Jeffrey Sutton on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. After his clerkship, Lindstrom worked in appellate practice at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, DC and Warner Norcross & Judd LLP in Grand Rapids, MI. He assumed his current role as Solicitor General in 2013.
